The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A caller supplicated about a punishment to fall on 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 but, We see it as near! 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. 24 For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking); 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 Are free of blame, 30 (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
