The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 And all those who are in the earth – then only if the redemption saves him! 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] 17 and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
