The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 but, We see it as near! 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
