The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 they see it as being far off; 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 stripping away his skin, 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 except those that pray, 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
