The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 [It will take place] on a Day when the sky will be like molten lead, 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Except those who pray, 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
