The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 they see it as being far off; 6 And We see it nigh. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. 8 and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 and all those on earth. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 save those that pray 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 And those who guard their chastity, 29 Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
