The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 save those that pray 22 who are constant in prayer; 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
