The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him). 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 And We behold it nigh. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 who are constant in prayer; 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
