The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 And We see it nigh. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 who are constant in prayer; 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
