The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 But We see it very near. 7 [It will take place] on a Day when the sky will be like molten lead, 8 and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 and all those on earth. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
