The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 Upon the disbelievers – the punishment that none can avert. 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 except those who are steadfast 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
