The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 On that Day the heaven shall become like molten copper, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 and all those on earth. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 stripping away his skin, 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 Except those who pray, 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss). 35
