The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient (O Muhammad SAW), with a good patience. 5 Lo! they behold it afar off 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 And the family in which he was. 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 Eager to roast; 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
