The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he selfishly withholds it [from others]. 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
