The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 but, We see it as near! 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 and guard their private parts 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
