The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 And all those that are in the earth, (wishing) then (that) this might deliver him. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
