The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
