The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
