The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 But not so the worshippers 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
