The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 they see it as being far off; 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and all those on earth. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
