The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him – the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 but, We see it as near! 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 Dragging by the head, 16 and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. 35
