The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 tearing away his skin! 16 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). 17 and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 except those that pray 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
