The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A requester seeks the punishment that will take place 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 save those that pray 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
