The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 But We see it very near. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all those who are in the earth then only if the redemption saves him! 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 except those that pray, 22 who are constant in prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss). 35
