The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
A caller supplicated about a punishment to fall on 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 they see it as being far off; 6 And We see it nigh. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). 17 And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 except those that pray, 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
