The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient (O Muhammad SAW), with a good patience. 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 but, We see it as near! 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
