The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 but We see it near. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking); 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
