The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 they see it as being far off; 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 On that Day the heaven shall become like molten copper, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 And the family in which he was. 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 Dragging by the head, 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 Save worshippers. 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
