The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A caller supplicated about a punishment to fall on 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 And We see it nigh. 7 On that Day the heaven shall become like molten copper, 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 Except those who pray, 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
