The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
