The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On that Day the heaven shall become like molten copper, 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Save worshippers. 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
