The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him – the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 And We behold it nigh. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 His wife and his brother, 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
