The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. 5 they see it as being far off; 6 but We see it is nigh. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 and guard their private parts 29 Are free of blame, 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
