The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 And all those that are in the earth, (wishing) then (that) this might deliver him. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35

Notes and Instructions

When reading the Colorful Quran in English transliterated Arabic mode, you may not notice that there is an algorithm designed to match the pause requirements of the original Arabic scripture, (waqf signs). As you may know, the original Arabic Quran has five main types of pauses, (waqf) signs. (1) Compulsory break, where the transliteration uses a full stop. (2) Optional pause with the preference for pausing, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a probability of two thirds. (3) Optional stop with an equal preference for pausing and resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a half-half probability. (4) Optional pause with the preference for resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a chance of one third. (5) Attraction pause, also called hugging, or (mu’anaka) sign, where it is compulsory to pause at either one of two nearby positions, but not both; where the transliteration inserts a comma at either one of the two locations with a half-half probability.
