The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 Save worshippers. 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 Are free of blame, 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
