The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). 5 Lo! they behold it afar off 6 But We see it very near. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all those that are in the earth, (wishing) then (that) this might deliver him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Save worshippers. 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord 27 Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
