The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 they see it as being far off; 6 But We see it very near. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all those who are in the earth then only if the redemption saves him! 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
