The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 stripping away his skin, 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 except those that pray, 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 and (finally) those who do not miss their ritual - prayers at the prescribed times; 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
