The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A caller supplicated about a punishment to fall on 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and all those on earth. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 except those that pray, 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
