The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him). 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 And the family in which he was. 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
