The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 but, We see it as near! 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 except those who are steadfast 22 who are constant in prayer; 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
