The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 His wife and his brother, 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
