The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient (O Muhammad SAW), with a good patience. 5 Lo! they behold it afar off 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 Are free of blame, 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
