In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou folded in garments! 1 Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little - 2 A half of it or a little less 3 or add a little), and chant the Koran very distinctly; 4 Verily, We shall send down to you a weighty Word (i.e. obligations, legal laws, etc.). 5 Surely, getting up at night [for worship] is the most potent means of subduing the self and most suitable for the word [of prayer]. 6 Surely you have in the day time a long occupation. 7 And remember the name of your Lord and, leaving others, devote yourself solely to Him. 8 Lord of the east and the west! No God is there but He! Wherefore take Him for thy trustee. 9 And bear thou with patience whatsoever they say, and depart from them with a becoming departure. 10 And leave Me alone [to deal] with those who give the lie to the truth - those who enjoy the blessings of life [without any thought of God] - and bear thou with them for a little while: 11 Surely with Us are heavy fetters and a flaming fire, 12 And a Food that chokes, and a Penalty Grievous. 13 (They will come across all this) on the Day when the earth and the mountains shall tremble violently and the mountains shall crumble into heaps of scattered sand. 14 We have sent to you, (O men!) a messenger, to be a witness concerning you, even as We sent a messenger to Pharaoh. 15 But the Pharaoh disobeyed the apostle; so We seized him with a grievous punishment. 16 How then, if you disbelieve, will you preserve yourselves on the day which will even turn the children hoary? 17 The Day when the heavens will be rent asunder and God's promise shall be fulfilled. 18 This, surely, is an admonition. So let him who will, take the right path to his Lord. 19
