In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
O thou wrapped up in thy raiment! 1 Stand (to pray) all night, except a little. 2 A half thereof, or abate a little thereof 3 Or a little more; and recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic tones. 4 Soon shall We send down to thee a weighty Message. 5 Indeed, the first part of night is heavier in tread, and more upright in speech. 6 Surely you have in the day time a long occupation. 7 And remember the name of your Lord and, leaving others, devote yourself solely to Him. 8 He is the only Lord, so choose Him as your guardian. 9 And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking. 10 Leave it to Me to deal with the affluent ones who give the lie (to the Truth), and bear with them for a while. 11 for with Us there are fetters, and a furnace, 12 and a food that chokes, and a grievous chastisement. 13 On a day when the earth and the mountains will tremble, and the mountains turn into dunes of flowing sand. 14 We have sent a messenger who is a witness over you, just as We sent a messenger to Pharoah before you. 15 Then Fir'awn disobeyed the apostle, wherefore We laid hold of him with a painful hold. 16 If you, disbelieve, how will you be able to protect yourselves from the hardships of the day which would even turn children grey-headed? 17 Whereon the sky will be cleft asunder? His Promise needs must be accomplished. 18 Verily, this is an admonition, therefore whosoever will, let him take a Path to His Lord! 19
