In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
O you who are wrapped up in your mantle, 1 Stand up for worship during the night, except for some part of it. 2 half the night, or a little less 3 and recite the Quran in a distinct tone; 4 We are about to reveal to you a mighty word. 5 Truly the rising by night is most potent for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (framing) the Word (of Prayer and Praise). 6 whereas by day a long chain of doings is thy portion. 7 And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with (exclusive) devotion. 8 He is the Lord of the east and the west, there is no deity but Him, so take Him as your Guardian. 9 And patiently endure upon what the disbelievers say, and leave them for good. 10 And leave Me and the rejecters, the possessors of ease and plenty, and respite them a little. 11 We have prepared for them fetters, flaming fire, 12 And food that chokes and a painful punishment, 13 upon the day when the earth and the mountains shall quake and the mountains become a slipping heap of sand. 14 Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger; so We seized him with a heavy Punishment. 16 Then how shall ye, if ye deny (Allah), guard yourselves against a Day that will make children hoary-headed?- 17 Whereon the heaven will be cleft asunder? His Promise is certainly to be accomplished. 18 This, verily, is a reminder: let him who wills, then set out on a way to his Sustainer! 19
