In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who wraps himself [in clothing], 1 Stand (to pray) all night, except a little. 2 For half the night, or reduce some from it. 3 Or add to it, and recite the Quran as it ought to be recited. 4 Behold, We shall bestow upon thee a weighty message 5 Surely the rising by night is the firmest way to tread and the best corrective of speech. 6 Indeed, for you by day is prolonged occupation. 7 But [whether by night or by day,] remember thy Sustainer's name, and devote thyself unto Him with utter devotion. 8 The Lord of the East and the West-- there is no god but He-- therefore take Him for a protector. 9 And bear patiently the vain things they utter, and gracefully forsake them. 10 Leave Me to those who cry lies, those prosperous ones, and respite them a little, 11 We have fetters (for them) and a blazing fire, 12 And food that chokes and a painful punishment - 13 On a Day whereon the earth and the mountains shall quake, and the mountains shall become a sand-heap poured forth. 14 Surely We have sent to you an Apostle, a witness against you, as We sent an apostle to Firon. 15 But Fir'aun (Pharaoh) disobeyed the Messenger [Musa (Moses)], so We seized him with a severe punishment. 16 Then how, if ye disbelieve, will ye protect yourselves upon the day which will turn children grey, 17 The very heaven being then rent asunder. His promise is to be fulfilled. 18 Surely this is a reminder, then let him, who will take the way to his Lord. 19
