Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who are wrapped up in your mantle, 1 rise (to pray) the night except a little; 2 Half of it, or a little less than that, 3 Or a little more; and recite the Quran (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style. 4 Verily, We shall send down to you a weighty Word (i.e. obligations, legal laws, etc.). 5 Verily, the rising by night (for Tahajjud prayer) is very hard and most potent and good for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (understanding) the Word (of Allah). 6 Surely you have in the day time a long occupation. 7 And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with (exclusive) devotion. 8 Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He; so take Him for a Guardian. 9 Bear patiently with what they say and with a fine abandonment forsake them. 10 Leave it to Me to deal with the deniers, who live a life of comfort, and bear with them a little longer. 11 Verily We shall have fetters with Us, and a roaring furnace, 12 And a food that choketh and a torment afflictive. 13 On that day, the earth and the mountains will be violently shaken, and the mountains will be turned into heaps of moving sand. 14 Lo! We have sent unto you a messenger as witness against you, even as We sent unto Pharaoh a messenger. 15 But Pharaoh rebelled against the messenger, whereupon We seized him with no gentle grip. 16 If you disbelieve, how will you guard yourself against the Day that will make children gray haired, 17 On that day, the heavens will be rent asunder. This is the decree of God which has already been ordained. 18 Lo! This is a Reminder. Let him who will, then, choose a way unto his Lord. 19
