In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
O you (Prophet Muhammad) wrapped, 1 stand up to pray for much of the night. 2 half of it, or reduce it a little; 3 Or increase thereto. And intone the Qur'an with measured intonations. 4 Verily, We shall send down to you a weighty Word (i.e. obligations, legal laws, etc.). 5 Surely the rising by night is the firmest way to tread and the best corrective of speech. 6 Verily there is for thee by day occupation prolonged. 7 Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Lord of the eastern and western regions, with due sincerity. 8 He is the Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He. So take Him alone for your Guardian, 9 Bear patiently whatever they say, do not yield to them and keep on preaching decently to them. 10 Leave those to Me who deny, the lovers of ease and comfort; and bear with them for a while. 11 Lo! with Us are heavy fetters and a raging fire, 12 And food that will stick in the throat, and painful torment 13 On a Day whereon the earth and the mountains shall quake, and the mountains shall become a sand-heap poured forth. 14 Surely We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We had sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure. 16 If you, disbelieve, how will you be able to protect yourselves from the hardships of the day which would even turn children grey-headed? 17 on which the heaven will split apart, and His promise is done. 18 Verily this is a reminder. So let him who desires take the way to his Lord. 19
