Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you who wraps himself [in clothing], 1 Rise to pray in the night except a little, 2 of one-half thereof - or make it a little less than that, 3 Or a little more; and recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic tones. 4 Surely We will make to light upon you a weighty Word. 5 Truly the rising by night is most potent for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (framing) the Word (of Prayer and Praise). 6 surely in the day thou hast long business. 7 But recite the name of your Lord withdrawing yourself from everything, devoting yourself exclusively to Him. 8 The Lord of the East and the West-- there is no god but He-- therefore take Him for a protector. 9 And bear thou with patience whatsoever they say, and depart from them with a becoming departure. 10 And leave Me and the rejecters, the possessors of ease and plenty, and respite them a little. 11 Surely with Us are heavy fetters and a flaming fire, 12 food that chokes and painful punishment 13 On a Day whereon the earth and the mountains shall quake, and the mountains shall become a sand-heap poured forth. 14 Surely We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We had sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. 15 But Pharoah rebelled against the messenger, so We seized him with a strong, crushing grip. 16 So how will you save yourselves, if you disbelieve, on a day that will turn children old? 17 on which the heaven will split apart, and His promise is done. 18 This, surely, is an admonition. So let him who will, take the right path to his Lord. 19
